This fund was established by Joan and Betty Wilkes in memory of their father and mother, Wesley and Grace Lilly Wilkes Sr., who came to Beckley in 1908. Wesley Wilkes made his name synonymous with insurance. He also was civic minded and was one of the founders of Pinecrest Sanitarium and Black Knight Country Club. Joan and Betty were educators in Raleigh County for 41 and 42 years respectively and owned a dress shop with their sister Grace. They were active in numerous civic, charitable and philanthropic endeavors in their community. Income from this fund will be equally distributed between the Salvation Army and the Raleigh County Humane Society.
