Meyer “Max” Lewin, last survivor of a family of nine from Poland, established this fund in 1993 in honor and memory of his family. His father, Yechiel, and his mother, Sara; his brother, Joseph, and three sisters, Eata, Leah and Chaya, all were victims of the Holocaust. As a Jewish family living in Poland, they were uprooted during World War II, sent to labor camps, taken to Russia and eventually moved to Germany and placed in concentration camps. There these six of his family were put to death. Two brothers, Abner and Harry had immigrated earlier and were instrumental in Max’s immigration to America after being liberated. Following his brother Harry’s death Max continued to operate his brother’s clothing store, Harry’s Men’s Shop, on Neville Street. Fund income is distributed to the Temple Beth El located in Beckley, WV for use of the Sunday School carried on there.
