Jay and Lisa Word made a generous gift to the Foundation in 2015 creating an unrestricted fund which honors John Cantley and serves as a permanent memorial to Lorraine, the parents of Cindy Cantley Turner. Both the Word and the Turner families have been long-time supporters of BAF. Lorraine died in 1998 after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was born in Dorothy, the daughter of Henry and Mamie Ward. She married John in 1953. He was born in Pettus and graduated from Marsh Fork H.S. He served his country in the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1952. They then moved to Huntington where John enrolled in Marshall University. Upon graduation, he accepted a position with the IRS and later passed the CPA exam. John and Lorraine moved to Beckley with their two children; he retired in 1985 as the District Director of Southern West Virginia Internal Revenue Service and went into private practice as a Certified Public Accountant, retiring again in 1996.
