This discretionary fund will generate income to help respond to the ever-changing opportunities presented over time in Raleigh County. Proceeds from the sale of a classic car donated by son-in-law Chuck Lucas and daughter Carolyn Lucas were combined with a match provided by the Massey Foundation to create a lasting memorial to this remarkable woman. Widowed at an early age, Hazel enrolled in the first class of Medical Assistants at Beckley College. She worked for Drs. Cooper and Klingensmith from 1962 until 1986 and then spent 12 years volunteering at Raleigh General Hospital. In 2014 Hazel became a member of the WV Voter Hall of Fame. The eligibility requirements set forth by the WV Secretary of State’s Office; recipients of this recognition must be registered voters who have voted in every General Election for 50 or more consecutive years. Hazel passed away on New Year’s Day 2015 at “98 years young”.
