FOSSL, or Friends of Shady Spring Library was organized in 1997 and sponsored programs such as book sales, children’s story hours, the summer reading project and gardening workshops. Its most ambitious project was the successful campaign to build a $190,000 addition to the Stralie Walker Shady Spring Branch Library. A bequest from Ethel B. Trail, the generosity of Shady Spring Library patrons, and a matching gift from Dr. Thomas Walker Health Foundation initially funded this endowment. Mrs. Trail was a well-known Raleigh County educator who died in 1999. Income from this fund is directed to further enhance Shady Spring Library programs and services.
