Established by the Oak Hill/Collins High School Alumni Association in 2010 this memorial scholarship honors William Roosevelt Lynch, an Oak Hill native. This fund will provide scholarships for students to attend West Virginia University’s basketball camp. Coach Lynch was a former Collins High standout athlete and coach at Oak Hill High and Collins Middle schools prior to becoming a miner. Mr. Lynch was one of 29 miners who perished in the Massey Upper Big Branch Mine disaster. Utilizing BAF’s ‘building over time’ option, the Alumni group began fundraising efforts in May 2010 and the endowment was fully funded by the end of July 2010. One of the events, Soul of Coal, was a celebration of the Diversity of Miners in Southern WV and honored both Coach Lynch and Joel “Jody’ Price. Kansas City Chiefs running back Thomas Jones was the keynote speaker at this event.
