This permanent endowment was created in honor of American Legion Post #70, incorporated in 1943. At one time there were 300 members, all African-American veterans living in the Raleigh County area. They have now merged with American Legion Post #32, and a portion of the proceeds from sale of Post #70’s property were used to establish a need and merit based scholarship fund. Income will be used for an annual scholarship to be awarded to a Raleigh County student with preference to a descendent of a member of American Legion Post #70.
