Although Woodrow C. Darnell had not lived in West Virginia for many years, he continued to remember his roots. Residents of Texas, Woody and his wife Claudia searched for a local community foundation while visiting in Raleigh County. They arrived at the BAF office with a check book and a purpose in mind. They made the required contribution to start building a named scholarship fund. Their intentions is to encourage others who attended Sophia high School to join them in creating a scholarship endowment that will provide both permanent recognition for the school and an ongoing source of scholarship funds for students who have a relative who attended Sophia High School. Selection of the recipients shall be made by Sophia High School Alumni Association and approved by the BAF Board of Directors. Woody passed away unexpectedly in July 2008 but Sophia Alumni has continued to make contributions while overseeing the scholarship selection.
