This unrestricted fund honors Sarah Jane “Sallie” Powers Word, wife of BAF’s first board president (1985-1986) and mother of the Foundation’s 2007-2009 board president. Sallie’s son, James W. Word III, has long been an advocate for increasing the pool of money available for discretionary grants. As a previous chair of the BAF distributions committee, he was well aware of the ever increasing number of worthwhile grant requests received by the Foundation as well as the value of being able to address major grant proposals. During her life Sallie supported the work of her husband and her son in building BAF. The unique life journeys and personal goals of the Word family have moved them to give back to a community that has been good to them. This fund was created in 2008.
