In a 2015 article Augustine “Augie” Hovanski was described as “one of the oldest West Virginia University football players still living.” His outstanding performance on the football field garnered him a four year scholarship at West Virginia University, where he played for three years and lettered in 1949. In 1950 he married his high school sweetheart Dixie Vass and in 1951 received his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Industrial Arts. He later obtained a Master’s Degree. While at WVU, Augie began his military servic with ROTC. Later while serving in the Korean conflict, he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. In addition to his sports acumen, he valued the importance of education. A concept instilled by his parents Augustine “Gus” and Violet Walney Hovanski, who had immigrated to America in 1925. During his 30 year career as a Raleigh County educator and principal he served at a number of schools. Mr. Hovanski passed away on October 25, 2015. Honoring their father’s life and value for pursuing an education his children establish this scholarship. This endowment will provide a scholarship award to a WWHS graduating athlete.
