Established in December 1988 just three years after Beckley Area Foundation’s creation this unrestricted endowment has augmented BAF resources used in the annual grants application process which has benefited hundreds of Raleigh County charities. The fund was established in honor of Frederick W. Sawyers, president of Piney Coking Coal Land Company and McCreery Coal Land Company, and in memory of his close business associate, Luther l. Scherer, who also held these positions before his death in 1963.
