Harry and Fonda Moran Fund

Current BAF board member and former Mayor of Beckley Emmett Pugh surprised his wife Linda Moran Pugh and his sister-in-law Susan Moran Lecher at Christmas 2016 when he established the Harry and Fonda Moran Fund at BAF. This unrestricted endowment honors the lives and legacies of Mr. and Mrs. Moran while providing financial support for community needs and growth through the annual community grant process. Harry Moran attended Fishburn Military Academy and was a Washington & Lee University graduate prior to signing as a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. Playing between June 1912 and October 1915 he exceeded rookie limits during the 1914 season. One sportswriter described him as “Hefty Lefty Moran, a southpaw which twirled an excellent game.” After leaving the game in 1914, he had extensive coal interests in the eastern United States. Relocating to Beckley he met and married Fonda Morrison of Fayette County. Mrs. Moran was a professional woman. She completed her training as a registered nurse at the historic Laird Memorial Hospital nursing school in Montgomery, WV.
