Dr. Bowles was a graduate of the University of Louisville Medical School and began his practice by making house calls on horseback and was the “coal company doctor” for many years at Glen White and Stotesbury. This endowment was established by his widow, Mrs. Ruth Pearl Bowles Cole, and Beckley National Bank where he served as director and vice president for many years. Income from this trust for scholarships formerly benefited Mountain State University and is now directed to University of Charleston-Beckley for individuals pursuing health related careers.
